Ron Cartlidge, rest in peace

We are saddened to share that our friend and longtime member, Ron Cartlidge, has passed. We received this letter Letter from his children, Justin & Jennifer.

It is with heavy hearts that we share the news that our father, Ron Cartlidge, passed away this morning. His physical and mental health have been declining over the past months and his body and mind were exhausted. We feel some peace knowing that he and our mom are together & will be celebrating Christmas with one another in Heaven. We will send up dates via this email chain as service plans are determined. Thank you for your words of kindness and support over the past few years.  Please feel free to share with anyone who may want to know. With love,  Justin and Jennifer

Funeral details and obituary

Funeral services for Ron Cartlidge will be held this coming Monday, December 20th at 2pm at First Baptist Church of Austin, with a gravesite internment immediately following at Austin Memorial Park Cemetery.  There are currently no limitations on how many can attend the service at FBC, but we are still in the process of confirming if a live stream will be available for those who are not able to attend in person.  If live streaming is not available, we are also looking into the possibility of having the service recorded so it can be uploaded to the Weed Corley Fish website for future viewing.

 ****************************************
Aubrey Ronald “Ron” Cartlidge born January 21, 1939, passed away on the morning of December 12th following a lengthy decline in his physical and mental health. Ron was an author, educator, teacher and coach all of his life. He was selected “Outstanding Teacher in Texas” in 1983 by the Texas Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance. He served his community as a member of the Austin Parks and Recreation Board where he was named outstanding Board member. He was also a Past President of the Austin Jaycees, Texas JCI Senate, a Master Mason, Knights Templar, and the Mustang Owners Club of Austin, Texas. He and his wife, Sharon, were active members of the First Baptist Church where he stayed connected to a variety of friends in the community and met weekly with his Sunday School classmates and others including Moton Crockett, a descendant of Davey Crockett.

Ron was a member of the I.B.M., The Magic Circle in London, the Magic Collectors’ Association and a Life Member of the S.A.M. He was a stalwart supporter of I.B.M. Ring #60 in Austin, Texas, and Past President of S.A.M. Assembly #206 and friend to the broader worldwide community of magicians. Up until the end, he still planned to attend the January 2022 S.A.M. National Convention in Las Vegas. Though interested in magic from his youth, it wasn’t until 1993 that he returned in a big way with the local magicians. He was always interested in magic, particularly from the historical aspect. He attentively watched sales of magic paraphernalia and published spiral bound books with updates on how much certain items went for at auction. But perhaps his best known achievement to the general world of magicians was the 2002 publication of “Houdini’s Texas Tours 1916 & 1923” which recounted the time Houdini spent in Texas. This was a book that was seen being carried around the White House by another Texan, G.W. Bush, during his Presidential years. Ron later published another limited edition of the book, “Houdini and the Ku Klux Klan.” Ron was active with the Texas Collectors’ group, too, taking on the role of chairing the group after the passing of Claude Crowe. For 11 years, Ron served as the Chairman of the Austin World Famous Magic Auctions, too. Ron was often seen attending not only the T.A.O.M. conventions, but also many of the national events. He hosted an annual Christmas party at his home that became legendary and an annual popular event.

A committal service for Aubrey will be held Monday, December 20, 2021 from 3:00 PM to 3:30 PM at Austin Memorial Park, 2800 Hancock Drive, Austin, TX 78731. Following the committal service will be a funeral service from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at First Baptist Church, 901 Trinity Street, Austin, TX 78701.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sharon, who passed from Alzheimer’s in 2020. Ron is survived by his children, Justin and Jennifer.

Our Banquet Performers: Randi Rain is one of Magic’s best kept secrets. In addition to her one of a kind performances of classic magic with a devilish twist, she is known as one of the ‘go to’ builders of custom props for magicians looking for something more than a little different. Her work has been featured in everything from Hollywood movies, to tours of Japan, to amusement parks across the world. She can be seen on YouTube teaching how to create works of art from scratch, to refurbishing toy robots, to performing magic.

Nicole Cardoza is a new face on the magic scene. She just completed a residency at Austin’s art space and collective workspace,  The Cathedral, and this will mark her first performance for the magic community. Her work is grounded in the history of legendary Black magicians of the past including Henry Box Brown and the Armstrong Family. Here’s your chance to catch a rising star on the magic scene.

Our headline performer is Michael Weber. Michael Weber has performed his own brand of original, award-winning magic (IBM, SAM, FISM) for over three decades. You have seen his work in Hollywood blockbusters including Forrest GumpOcean’s 13The Prestige and The Illusionist. While he often lectures for magicians, it is rare to see him perform some of his closely guarded miracles that have earned him his rightful status as a magical legend.  ….And don’t forget a special guest performer or two. Surprise await!

Ask yourself – Is there a Drawing Duplication so perfect that all you need is any four pieces of cardboard, any four markers and a room full of spectators you want to destroy? No preshow, no glimpses, no nonsense. Get a sneak peek at a miracle. Is it possible to learn a memorized deck in two minutes or less? Can you instantly, easily and permanently know every card in order, the card at every number from 1 to 52 and the numerical and relative location of every card using any deck and only your brain? Yes, and Michael Weber will teach you. Can you learn the innermost wants, likes or fears of anyone using only a pencil and paper? Yes, and Michael Weber will show you how. When was the last time someone fooled you, inspired you, made you laugh, made you think and most of all made you proud to call yourself a magician? Michael Weber has performed his own brand of original, award-winning magic (IBM, SAM, FISM) for over three decades. You have seen his work in Hollywood blockbusters including Forrest GumpOcean’s 13The Prestige and The Illusionist. Now you can meet the man behind the miracles. Weber promises an amazing blend of original magic with cards, impromptu non-card magic and powerful mentalism. Join Michael Weber and press the reset button on the way you think about magic.

Michael Weber

We are thrilled to host a lecture by Michael Weber, who has performed for two U.S. Presidents. His style and originality have made him the personal performer of choice for celebrities like Jerry Seinfeld, Arnold Schwartzeneger, Sharon Stone, Frank Sinatra, Steven Spielberg and Johnny Carson for their own private events. He has established traditions with Ray Bradbury and Michael Milkin by performing at their respective Halloween and New Year’s celebrations for several years.
